We have held off in our series on black gems to mention the onyx – until the very end. It is the quintessential black stone and has been a favorite since the Victorian era. When only the elegance of an onyx will do, Peter Suchy Jewelers have you covered.
Onyx Earrings with Mother of Pearl Carvings
These elegant earrings were fashioned in the 1960s. Adhering to the popular wing style of the time, the setting material is 18k yellow gold. Two white translucent Mother of Pearl wings measure 25mm by 10mm. They are separated from the onyxes by bands of gold that is studded with diamonds. The black gemstones are carved to represent the starting points of the wings and are therefore triangular. They measure 11mm by 8mm. From top to bottom, these earrings measure 35.3mm. They have a width of 18.25mm.
Black Onyx Dangle Earrings with Diamonds Set in Silver and Pink Gold
These spectacular earrings show off the onyx to its fullest advantage. We believe these to be Victorian revival jewelry from the 1920s. The stones have a teardrop shape and weigh a combined total of 58.0cts. They are simply stunning! The setting material is 18k pink gold with silver accents. A total of 44 rose-cut diamonds weigh .25cts and adorn the settings.
Victorian Onyx Bangle Bracelet
This is one of the most amazing Victorian bangle bracelets that we have seen in a very long time. Dating back to the 1890s, the stones are set in 14k deep pink gold. Channel-set into the gold are 32 onyxes measuring 5mm each. The bangle is made to fit a standard seven-inch wrist, although it also accommodates a wrist measuring up to 7.75 inches. The bangle opens up for ease of wear.
1960s Onyx ring with Diamonds in Yellow Gold
This one is an eye-grabber. Made in the 1960s, it features 14k yellow gold for the setting. The highly polished onyx is oval and weighs 18cts. This gemstone’s beauty is accentuated by 16 full-cut round diamonds that present with a collective weight of .80cts. The setting and the diamonds – put together four at a time – truly give this ring an amazing appearance. It is a sure conversation starter.
Edwardian Art Deco Necklace with Coral, Onyx and Diamonds
The combination of raw materials is a surprise. The Art Deco touches are undeniable and the three-dimensional presentation is chic. Eighteen karat white gold is the material that holds it all together. A total of 60 round diamonds weighing .44cts and a carefully cut piece of salmon-colored coral highlight the beauty of the onyx. Wear this necklace to a party or just around town – it is that versatile.
